In 1808, mountain man John Colter ran and climbed 150 miles while being pursued by members of the Blackfeet nation. His run for life became a part of heroic American history and culture. In 1823, hunter Hugh Glass, left for dead after being torn apart by a grizzly bear dragged himself out of his grave and crawled more than 80 miles to wreak revenge on the trusted friend who abandoned him. This authentic and unique historical novel follows the survival trail and blood spoor of both men. History has recorded their triumphs -- Colter discovering what is now Yellowstone National Park. Hugh Glass becoming an icon of the American frontier

Wilderness edition by Gerald Hausman Roger Zelazny Literature Fiction eBooks

This is a superlative novel that organizes narratives of the separate treks of John Coulter and Hugh Glass into a contrapuntal meditation on man and the will to survive. It is ostensibly built on stories of the American West and the conflicts with the Amerinds. However, this book does not fit neatly into the category of "Western." It's something more than that, and different.

I was reminded more than a little of Lansing's book, _Endurance_, as well as Slavomir Rawicz's _The Long Walk_: more (or less) "true" books based on real life events. There is drama and tension and hope in such books, and that is a feature of _Wilderness_, too.

However, _Wilderness_ is a work of fiction. It is very well written -- sometimes superlatively so. The final chapter, where the story lines comes together, is brilliantly handled, and the arrangement and pacing of the two story lines is masterful.

This book needs to be back in print. Highly recommended.

Wilderness edition by Gerald Hausman Roger Zelazny Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

the author was a bit wordy straying off to imaginary places trying to get into the heads of the characters delusions which I found distracting
I have been raised 'in the bush' of Alaska and know quite a bit about wilderness living etc. This story was possible until toward the end when things were said that weren't possible.
An amazing old West story as told from the incredible men who lived it. Highly recommended.
Very well written with extremely good descriptions of what each individual must have been feeling. The book brought me back to an earlier genre I haven't visited in a long time.
Received item quickly and in good order. Very happy.
Co-written by Gerald Hausmann, one of my favorite authors, the movie " The Revenant" was based on this book. A great read of courage, danger & the irrepressible human spirit & desire for survival.
these are stories of the west that are really not stories but anthologies and although they become a bit fanciful and sometimes reach beyond the readers ability to grasp the mindset of the amazing hardships these two men overcome it still gives us a sense of wonder and admiration. These two are tough, honest, and most of all admirable in every way we can imagine. These men exist today, but who would ever know it?
